This Coffee's Story:

Our Nicaragua Direct-Trade Organic coffee comes from the lush, mountainous region of Matalgalpa, Nicaragua. For over 70 years, the Bendaña-McEwan family has been in the coffee business, and currently owns three estates producing some of the best hand-picked coffees washed with pure mountain spring water. The environment around the family's plantations is optimal for coffee production. The combination of ideal geographical location, rainfall amounts, temperature, soil pH, sandy/loamy soil, and altitude of 1,200-1,500 meters above seal level translate to high quality coffee, as recognized by the Cup of Excellence organization.

This certified organic coffee comes from directly family-owned farms organized around Cooperativa Multifuncional Arca de Noé  R.L, a cooperative operating in the municipality of San Juan de Río Coco within the departments of Madriz, Nicaragua. The cooperative has 102 members (40 women) who, on average, each cultivate 7 acres of coffee. The coffee is harvested, wet-processed, patio sun-dried, sorted, and exported to roasters around the world.

The cooperative strives to improve the quality of life of its members every day through the various services the co-op can offer them, including marketing, technical assistance, and small business lending to all of its members. The co-op also takes active steps to care for and protect the natural resources of the area, including work with systematic pruning, high densities, planting geometric designs, and windbreaks to produce only the best coffee crop.

This Central American coffee has nice acidity, evoking some ripe summer plums or mid-winter clementines, with a medium body and some floral aromatics. Enjoy this bean as we roast it to a light-medium level to fully embrace this charismatic single origin.
